I’ve recently watched Rasmus Lerdorf’s presentation at Etsy, and I highly encourage you to watch it if you are a PHP Developer and want to know where the language is going.

There were many take aways for me. The biggest was the list of gotchas, Rasmus has noticed while working with different start-ups over the years.  Another great part is his explanations of PHP 5.4, including traits, closures, and stuff that is no longer supported. He does a very good job at explaining the intricacies of those new features.

It is a pretty long video, but worth it.  Make sure to stick around for the QA as well.

Web2.0Expo/NY Thoughts so far

Avectra, the company I work for, sent the AvectraLabs crew to Web2.0Expo in New York.   We had the privilege of attending the workshops on Monday, and the conference which runs through Thursday.   So far I have learned quite a lot and became excited about many of these tools and processes presented by the plethora of speakers here.  I plan on writing a summary about the presentations and workshops I’ve attended.  Presentations that include CoffeScript, Node.JS, Flickr’s PuSH API, Redis, and much more.

One of the best presentations was given by Chad Dickerson, CEO of Etsy and the culture of Etsy.  Where I learned about Deployinator, and the whole mentality of Code as Craft.

I’ll write up a better post summarising the presentations I attended and what I’ve learned.

I would like to thank Avectra,Inc. for allowing me to experience all of this pure awesomeness.
